The wood "living material"

Features, not faults

Wood is the most used material for the production of windows: its heat and sound-insulating features, mechanical strength, use flexibility, range of colours and types make this material irreplaceable to guarantee stable and hard-wearing products.
Palomba®chooses only those kinds of wood showing the most valuable characteristics to guarantee frames ensuring high quality performances.
But since the wood is a "living" and natural material, it has some typical features which people often mistakes for faults: knowing them will be very useful to understand this material better.

Dimensional movements and dilations

Wood is a hygroscopic material adapting its level of dampness to the surrounding environment: this may cause slight warps which have to be considered normal if they do not jeopardize the correct working of the window.

Resin leaks

Some kinds of wood (mainly the conifers) are more subject to resin leaks which, in small quantities, are normal.

Grains

Wood is characterized by the presence of more or less regular grains whose beauty allows the wood to differ from any other kind of material. Therefore, grain irregularities are to be considered as typical features of the wood, according to the kind of wood used.

Knots

Knots, particularly in some kinds of wood, are typical features and not faults of the frame.
Possible non-perfect knots can be restored with traditional carpentry products, by using suitable fillers.
Anyway, the position and size of the knots do not have to jeopardize the correct working of the window.

Colour variations

Differences in the kind of fibre and features between the several types of wood can cause natural colour variations.
The frame itself can show colour variations and different shades, though it keeps its features unchanged.
The exposure of the frames to sunlight, especially those produced from particular kinds of wood, can cause, in time, colour variations.
Palomba® windows have a triple layer of anti-yellowing varnish in order to considerably reduce colour variations in time.
To be precise, the external aluminium cladding can also show different shades and colour variations on the same frame.

Gluing

The gluing process, when performed properly, helps to improve the performance of the frame.
Palomba® uses only water resistant glues on its products.

Colour of the product

It is better to remember that the colour of the enamels the company uses to paint its frames will never be the same as the samples displayed by your dealer. So, please, take it into account when choosing the colour of your frame.
